Inside Out Costumes
By Conor Ward · Last updated June 13, 2026
Inside Out works best as a group: Joy's yellow beside Sadness's blue, Anger's red, Fear's purple, Disgust's green, and the sequel's four. A single Emotion reads fine alone, but the ensemble is the draw for families and friend groups.
The coordination move: Nine Emotions read as one set only as a color wheel: each owns a single saturated signal color, and the group works when every costume is loud and clean, not detailed. Match the saturation across all of them, buy the bright wig and the solid color over any fussy texture, and let Joy anchor the middle while the rest orbit her.
- Joy
HalloweenCostumes.com · $59.99
The anchor. Brightest and most central, the yellow everyone else is read against. She should be the most saturated of the nine; if Joy reads dim, the whole wheel goes muddy.
- Sadness
HalloweenCostumes.com · $49.99
The blue that makes Joy's yellow pop. Keep her round and a little slumped so she reads as the foil, not just someone in a blue sweater.
- Anger
HalloweenCostumes.com · $69.99
The loudest, smallest beat. Brick-red and square, ideally on the shortest person so the size gag lands next to the taller Emotions; the flame headpiece is what stops him reading as a generic red guy.
- Fear
HalloweenCostumes.com · $69.99
The vertical counterweight to Anger's stub. Purple, tall, and thin, all bow tie and nerves, so let his height do the contrast and skip any bulk.
- Disgust
HalloweenCostumes.com · $79.99
The eye-roll of the group. Green and put-together where the others are messy, so a little polish on her, neat wig and the scarf, reads as character rather than fuss.
- Anxiety
HalloweenCostumes.com (adult) · $69.99
The frazzled newcomer from the sequel. Orange, with the volcanic-updo hair doing all the work; that spiky updo is what sets her apart from the calmer original five beside her.
- Envy
Your closet + thrift · ~$15–25
Tiny and teal, all big eyes. Her job is the size-and-color gap: she's the smallest and the most blue-green, so keep her low and let the teal skin name her against the others.
- Ennui
Your closet + thrift · ~$15–25
The deadpan teen. Indigo and slouched, blunt-banged, doing nothing on purpose, so she only reads as a character next to the louder Emotions. Park her beside Anger or Joy, never alone.
- Embarrassment
Your closet + thrift · ~$15–20
The gentle giant. Hot pink and huge, hood up and folding into himself; his size is the joke, so the bigger the person and the more hunched the posture, the better he lands in the lineup.
Dressing a smaller crew? The original five, Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust, are the recognizable core; add the sequel's four, Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment, only when you've got the people.
No costume here is a long pole, they're bright basics plus a wig. Order the wigs first; the right hair color does more of the work than the outfit, and the cosplay sellers that carry the sequel's colors sell out at season.
Skip the group if you want one standout instead of a set. A single Emotion reads fine alone, so you don't need the group to pull off Joy.
