How we pick the store
Picking the costume is one job, and picking the store is another. Here's how we do it.
What earns a store its spot
A store has to give you something the others don't: a better price, a more convenient pickup location if you're not having it shipped, a roomier size run, faster or free shipping, or a more forgiving return policy.
If there's no unique or comparable benefit for you, we don't include the store on the page.
Returns
Only you can decide how much risk you're comfortable with in a return policy. A store that doesn't allow returns or charges a restocking fee only matters as much as the likelihood you'll want to return the item. So the question is simple: how happy will you be keeping the item if the fit proves poor or the quality doesn't meet your expectations?
If you're sure you'd be happy keeping it, a firmer policy won't matter to you. For example, you want the screen-accurate, one-size-fits-all mask or the custom costume tailored to your measurements. If you'd regret the purchase, the store that offers flexibility gives you the safety net you seek.
Cost
We know the true cost isn't only the sticker price. A pricier item with free, fast shipping can cost you less than a "deal" that adds shipping and takes a week. Free returns add value, too, which can turn a "maybe" into a safe "yes." We weigh delivered cost and return risk together.
The stores we use
Policies change; we always recommend checking the store's policy page before you buy:
| Store | Returns | Shipping | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon | 30 days, usually free | Prime: free + fast (else free over $35) | The safest choice when you're unsure. Many costume items ship from third-party sellers; check "Sold by" and confirm their return policy. |
| Spirit Halloween | Seasonal — the Halloween window closes in late October, and you pay return shipping | Free over $40 | Seasonal in-store pickup |
| HalloweenCostumes.com | 30 days; you pay return shipping; 18% restocking fee | No free shipping; rates vary by order | First-party; deep licensed catalog. Wigs, cosmetics, and prosthetics aren't returnable. |
| Target | 90 days (365 for Target-owned brands); free returns | Free over $35 (no minimum with a Target Circle Card) | Some items ship via third-party sellers — check "sold by." |
| Walmart | 90 days, free | Free over $35 (free under $35 with Walmart+) | Marketplace (third-party) items vary by seller — 30-day minimum, and they can charge up to a 20% restocking fee. |
| Disney Store | 30 days; you pay return shipping | Free over $85 | First-party licensed |
Etsy, eBay, and other marketplaces set returns per individual seller — they vary widely, so check the specific listing before you buy. We won't state a blanket policy we can't stand behind.
We hope knowing how we choose stores makes it easier for you to choose yours.
